When EMC needed to provide thoughtful information in a white paper, they chose Beasley Direct as their white paper copywriter.</p>
<p>Our approach to writing white papers is to provide objective information that is useful to the audience and relevant to the issues they are facing. We met with several product managers and recommended two papers that would address all of the decision criteria in this market. To date, we’ve been told that these two white papers are two of the all-time most downloaded assets from the <a href="http://www.emc.com/" target="_blank">EMC website</a>.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.paycycle.com" target="_blank">PayCycle</a> wanted to test the efficacy of specific points within its marketing platform. In this case, they wanted to see whether “automated and all inclusive” would beat out “easy and profitable” in an ad aimed at accountants who might be persuaded to try this online payroll service. PayCycle hired Beasley as their direct marketing agency.</p>
<p>Since our assignment focused on features and the other creative on benefits, we had our work cut out for us! We chose to use screen shots but bring them to life with 3-D graphics. We added a subtext to extend the feature “fully automated” to the benefit that you&#8217;ll have much less to worry about. Our results were close to the top in the head-to-head test, which we considered an accomplishment. The client also learned that year end (when this ad ran, and when many accountants are rushing to close their clients&#8217; books) isn&#8217;t the best time to advertise to them.</p>

<p>The marketing objective of any white paper is to establish the expertise of the organization offering it — usually so you&#8217;ll feel more confident in buying the products <a href="http://www.emc.com/" target="_blank">the company</a> sells. In this case we&#8217;re describing the steps by which &#8220;fixed content&#8221; is entered in a database — think of a handwritten mortgage loan application, or a police accident report — so it can be accessed along with electronic records.</p>
<p>The challenge was to make the story compelling to a variety of readers in different industries — financial services, insurance and more — so they could learn from examples in other fields, rather than assuming those examples were not relevant to them. And of course, we needed to establish our client&#8217;s products as the solution to manage a variety of document and image processing needs.</p>

<p>This white paper had an element of guerrilla marketing. Competitors had started pushing &#8220;basic&#8221; content management services that were far cheaper than our client&#8217;s, and we needed to counter by establishing that &#8220;when content matters&#8221;, you really need the best.</p>
<p>Our strategy was to aim the copy at an IT content director who&#8217;s trying to sell a system to their CFO&#8230; with the assumption that when they show how great the ROI can be on a system like <a href="http://www.emc.com/enterprise-content-management/documentum/index.htm?" target="_blank">Documentum&#8217;s</a>, it will be easier to get funding and any interest in saving through a cut-rate &#8220;basic&#8221; system will become a non-issue. Through case history snapshots and a listing of all the things that a content management system should achieve, they&#8217;re left with the conclusion they need Documentum.</p>
